Dr Nyda Fourie (CEO/ Research Investigator)

Dr. Fourie obtained her MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1988 and received her master’s degree in Family Medicine cum laude in 1992 also from the UFS. She was part of the Department of Pharmacology, UFS from 1994 to 2000, first as Clinical Pharmacologist and lecturer, and later as Senior Clinical Pharmacologist. Dr. Fourie is involved in a private drug and toxicology consultation service (South African Drug and Toxicology Trust) since 2001. She is a co-founder and trustee of the trust, and is involved in the service rendering of the practice. In 2004 Dr Fourie became involved in clinical trials as investigator and has since gained vast experience as principal investigator in the conduction of phase II, III, and IV clinical trials. In rendering a drug and toxicology consultation service for many years, considerable expertise in these fields was gained. Her liaison network with the specialist physicians is regarded as a huge asset for Iatros International research unit and is utilized for patient recruitment.

Sr Annelise Hurter (Research Nurse / Study Coordinator)

SrHurter is a registered nurse with a BSoc Sc (Hons) nursing degree which she obtained in 1987 from the University of the Free State. She has 22 years experience in contract research and oncology nursing. She has a special interest in Oncology Studies, she also has been study co-ordinator in a variety of other speciality studies including Neurology, Cardiology, and Metabolic diseases (hyperlipid-aemia, obesity and Diabetes Mellitus)

Sr Alieske Coetzee (Research Nurse / Quality Assurance)

Sister Alieske has 22 years experience in clinical research (Bioequivalence / Phase III and IV studies), initially as a project nurse, later as study monitor and quality co-ordinator. Sr Coetzee has performed internal and external monitoring on all study-related documents and processes throughout the duration of trials. Sr Coetzee also conducted Quality Control (QC) and compliance checks on deliverables and has assisted operational staff to develop and implement operational QC processes. Sr Coetzee has experience in the verification of the accuracy and completeness of data generated during study conduct. Sr Coetzee's qualifications include a nursing diploma, and diplomas in aviation medicine, junior management as well as total quality management. Sr Coetzee also worked as study co-ordinator in a variety of special studies.

Sr Reinet Lourens (Project Manager and Administrative Manager)

Sr Lourens obtained her Hon B Soc Sc (Nursing) degree from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein in 1985. She has 22 years Clinical Research experience. She worked for 10 years at Farmovs-Parexel in Bio-equivalence research studies, clinical studies and also as quality coordinator prior taking a new position as Study Coordinator at Wits Health Consortium at PHRU in Soweto for 6 years. Sr Lourens was appointed project manager and administrative manager of Iatros International research unit in 2012.

Sr Rita van Rooyen (Registered Nurse / Patient Recruitment)

Sr van Rooyen is a registered nurse with a B Soc Sc (Hons) nursing degree which she obtained in 1998 from the University of the Free State, and a B Soc Sc Nursing M degree in Intensive Care that she obtained in 2001 from the same University. Before becoming involved in nursing, Sr van Rooyen did military training at the SA Women’s College in George. Rita worked as a registered nurse at Universitas Hospital from 1998 to 2001, and from September 2001 until 2007 at Rosepark Hospital. After that she worked at “Navitas Occupational Health and Wellness” in Bloemfontein for 3 years. Since October 2011 she has been mainly involved with patient recruitment at Iatros International research unit.

Annelie Opperman (Data Capturer)

After careers in the banking industry, she joined Quintiles to do data entry work and was promoted to Clinical Data Coordinator. In October 2016 Ms Opperman became part of the Iatros International research unit as a data-capturer. Currently she is gaining experience in the quality control field.

Dr Braam Barnard (Cardiologist)

Dr Barnard obtained his MB ChB degree and his M Med (Internal Medicine) from the University of the Free State respectively in 1996 and 2002. He continued with his Fellowship in Cardiology which he completed in 2007 and also obtained a certificate in Cardiology from the College of Medicine South Africa in 2009. He was part of the Department of Cardiology, UFS from 2004 to 2010. In 2010 he started practising in Mediclinic Bloemfontein as a cardiologist in the private sector. In 2008 Dr Barnard became part of the Iatros Internation research unit as a consultant and investigator.

Dr Jaco Cilliers (Neurologist)

Dr Cilliers obtained his MB ChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2001, after which he completed his internship at the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London in 2002. He completed his community service at the Military Hospital in Potchefstroom in 2003 and worked as resident medical officer at the “Cape Medical Services” in the UK for 13 months thereafter. From April 2005 until Feb 2010 he worked as registrar in the departments of Internal Medicine and Neuroloy at the Free State Academic Hospital Complex in Bloemfontein. He obtained his M Med Neurology degree from the UFS and his FC Neurology from the College of Medicine, South Africa in, 2009. Since 2010 he has been practicing as specialist neurologist in the private sector at Mediclinic Bloemfontein. In 2011 Dr Cilliers became part of Iatros International research unit as investigator.

Dr Riaan Flooks (Specialist Physician / Nephrologist)

Dr Riaan Flooks completed his pre-graduate studies (MB ChB) at the Medical University of South Africa in 1998 and completed his internship in the Port Elizabeth Provincial hospital. His community service year was done in Umtata General Hospital and All Saints Hospitals. In 2001 he worked as medical officer in the Livingstone hospital in Port Elizabeth and then as registrar in the Universitas and Pelonomi Academic hospital complexes. In 2005 he obtained his M Med degree in Internal Medicine from the Free State University. He did a fellowship in Nephrology in Universitas Hospital and worked as senior specialist in nephrology in the Universitas and Pelonomi hospitals. He obtained a Certificate in Nephrology in 2008 from the College of Southern Africa and has been in private practice in the Mediclinic Bloemfontein Hospital since 2009.

Dr Philip Hutton (Specialist Physician)

Dr Philip Hutton matriculates at Grey College Bloemfontein as Dux pupil. He obtains his MB ChB from the University of the Free State in 1991, and obtained several academic awards during his study years. He works in the Dept of Internal Medicine for three years, 3 Military Hospital as medical officer and part of the permanent force with the rank of major. He completes his post-graduate studies (M Med Int Med) at the University of the Free State in 1998 and receives academic colors. For the last ten years he has been working as a specialist physician in the private sector in Mediclinic Bloemfontein Hospital. His field of interest includes among others intensive care, pulmonology, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, rheumatology.

Dr Matthys Heynecke (General Practitioner / Research Investigator)

Dr Heynecke obtained his MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2000. He worked in Scotland for 2 years, first as Senior House Officer in Gynaecology and then as Medical Officer in a Military Reserves Training and Mobilisation Centre. He then worked as Medical Officer in the Department of Anaesthetics of the UFS and obtained a Diploma in Anaesthetics from the College of Medicine of South Africa. In 2010 Dr Heynecke completed his Dispensing Course through the Foundation for Professional Development, South Africa. He also completed an Advanced Course in Diabetes Care via the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology (CDE, South Africa) in 2015 and a course in Aesthetic Medicine in 2016. From 2007 he has been practising as a general practitioner in Bloemfontein, including part-time after-hours work as casualty doctor in one of the private hospitals in Bloemfontein – and volunteered at the Jean Webber House for the physically disabled. In 2017 Dr Heynecke became part of Iatros International research unit as sub-investigator.

Dr Derick Aucamp (Specialist Physician / Cardiologist)

Dr Aucamp obtained his MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2000. He completed his internship and community service – and then obtained valuable experience in the practice of Emergency Medicine in Birmingham, UK. He returned to South Africa where he worked as general practitioner for 4 years. He also worked in Ireland as general practitioner for a few months. Dr Aucamp worked as registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine at UFS from 2008 until 2012. During this time, he received an MSc degree in Sport’s Medicine cum laude from the University of Pretoria, an MMed degree in Internal Medicine from UFS, a certificate in Cardiology from the University of Stellenbosch and was accepted as a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa. He then worked as a consultant in the Department of Cardiology, before he started practising as a Cardiologist in the private sector in Mediclinic Bloemfontein. In 2016 Dr Aucamp became part of Iatros International research unit as investigator and consultant.

Dr Wilhelm Herbst (Specialist Physician)

Dr Wilhelm Herbst (Specialist Physician) Dr Herbst obtained his MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2004. After completing his internship and community service, he started working as Medical Officer in the Department of Cardiology and then as registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine of the UFS. In 2011 he received his MMed degree in Internal Medicine from the UFS. He was appointed consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr Herbst obtained a Certificate in Cardiology in 2015 from the UFS and was accepted as a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa, also in 2015. He started practising as private Cardiologist in Bloemfontein, first at Netcare Private hospital – and from October 2017 at Mediclinic Bloemfontein. In 2017 Dr Herbst became part of Iatros International research unit as investigator and consultant.

Dr Wimpie De Lange (Specialist physician / Endocrinologist)

Dr De Lange obtained his MBChB degree from the University of the Free State in 2001 and a MMed degree in Internal Medicine in 2007. In 2010 he obtained a certificate in Endocrinology and Metabolism from the College of Medicine of South Africa. Dr de Lange has a special interest in metabolic bone disorders and is currently busy finalizing his Ph.D. on the topic. He has been in private practice for the past 5 years. In 2016 Dr De Lange became part of Iatros International research unit as consultant and investigator.

Dr. Juanita Lombaard (General Practitioner)

Dr. Lombaard obtained her MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2002. She worked in a variety of health care settings, from tertiary level to primary health care, and was as Senior Medical Officer responsible for the Anti-Retroviral Programme at a dedicated ARV/HIV clinic. Dr. Lombaard received certificates in Essential Skills Medical Education and Leadership from the Association for Medical Education in Europe in 2012. From 2014 to 2015 she did medical writing for Parexel International on phase I studies. She has been teaching medical and allied health care students since 2006 at various institutions such as the UFS, Central University of Technology and University of Johannesburg. In 2019 Dr. Lombaard became part of Iatros International research unit.

Billey Breytenbach (Clinical Technologist)

Mr Breytenbach obtained his B Tech degree in Clinical Technology from the Central University of Technology in 2008. He has a special interest in Pulmonology and the diagnosis of sleep disorders through polysomnography. From 2007 to 2008 he completed his practical training in Pulmonology. He was aslo head of the sleep laboratory at Universitas Academic Hospital from qualifying in 2008 until lthe middle of 2010. Since then he has working in the private sector in Pulmonology, and manages his own private Sleep Laboratory. He has been involved in contract research with Iatros International research unit for the last five years.

Dr Ehrard Bezuidenhout (Specialist Physician / Nephrologist)

Dr Bezuidenhout obtained his MBChB degree from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2000. After completing his internship and community service, he gained valuable experience in general practice and Emergency Medicine both nationally and in the UK. He returned to the UFS to complete his MMed degree in Internal Medicine in 2009. During 2012 he obtained both a certificate in Nephrology from the College of Medicine of South Africa and a Post-graduate Diploma in Nephrology from the UFS. He worked in the Department of Internal Medicine, division Nephrology of the Universitas Academic Hospital from May 2010 until November 2014, first as a fellow - and later as a sub-specialist in Nephrology. Since December 2014 he has been in private Nephrology practice at Life Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein. In 2016 Dr Bezuidenhout became part of Iatros International research unit as consultant and investigator.

Dr Ray Plaatjies (Specialist Physician)

Dr Plaatjies obtained his MBChB degree in 1998 from the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein. After completing his internship and community service – including ICU and Trauma rotations - he started working a s registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine, UFS, in 2001. In 2005 he obtained his MMed degree in Internal Medicine. He has been in private practice for 14 years – first at Pelonomi and Universitas Netcare private hospitals, and since 2018 at Mediclinic Bloemfontein. In 2016 Dr Plaatjies became part of Iatros International research unit as consultant and investigator.

Ms Ingrid van Dyk (Pharmacist)

Ms van Dyk received her B Pharm degree cum laude from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth, in 2016. After completing her internship and community service, she became part of Iatros International research unit as a pharmacist.
